Guidelines and Consensus | Expert Consensus on Medical Nutrition Management of Dyslipidemia
Published: 2023-12-08

Dyslipidemia refers to abnormal metabolism of lipids in plasma, mainly including elevated total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), together with reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). It is one of the independent risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and has become a major public health problem that urgently needs to be addressed. Both the Chinese Guidelines for Lipid Management (2023 Edition) and the 2018 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association cholesterol guideline state that dietary nutrition therapy and lifestyle improvement are the foundational measures for managing dyslipidemia. Against this background, the Expert Consensus on Medical Nutrition Management of Dyslipidemia was developed by integrating China's national conditions with extensive domestic and international evidence and expert opinion, with the aim of providing a reference for healthcare professionals in delivering medical nutrition management for dyslipidemia and giving medical nutrition a stronger role in lipid management.

1 Medical Nutrition Management

Studies have shown that dietary counseling can effectively reduce TG levels in high-risk populations and is at least as effective as usual care in improving TC levels. Systematic reviews indicate that medical nutrition management can improve the lipid profile—TC, LDL-C, TG and HDL-C—as well as fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and body mass index (BMI).

[Recommendations]

Medical nutrition management is clinically effective and cost-effective for patients with dyslipidemia and cardiometabolic risk factors; healthcare teams responsible for dyslipidemia management should include nutrition professionals to provide medical nutrition management. Accumulating clinical experience and updates to the consensus on medical nutrition management of dyslipidemia will help establish and refine the medical nutrition management system for dyslipidemia, improve unhealthy dietary behaviors and health literacy among patients, enhance precision in lipid management, and carry important significance for preventing and delaying the onset and progression of ASCVD.

Precision Blood Lipid Testing Service Based on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is an ideal analytical technique: it enables non-invasive, non-destructive and quantitative investigation of molecular structures, dynamic processes and chemical reactions. A large body of literature confirms that NMR is an irreplaceable tool for detecting subgroups of low-density lipoprotein particles (LDL-P), and the value of LDL-P in the early warning and treatment monitoring of cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) has been widely reported—the smaller and more numerous the lipoprotein particles, the higher the risk of atherosclerosis. The 2022 Chinese Expert Consensus on Non-Traditional Lipid Parameters and Risk Management of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease already recommends NMR as a new technology, and a growing number of non-traditional lipid parameters have since been incorporated into domestic expert consensus documents.

Against this backdrop, ProteinT has taken the lead in introducing internationally advanced NMR spectroscopy technology into China and applying it in clinical practice, addressing the pain point that conventional lipid parameters are not sufficiently precise. Building on its stable performance advantages, the company has established a fully automated standard platform featuring simple sample preparation, automatic data acquisition and processing, and automatic generation of quantitative reports—requiring no prior NMR expertise.
